Process
Community Garden Collage was a J-term final project called Urban Arts Workshops. The project examined the disperate origins of green space in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. From Tompkins Square Park to scores of community gardens, green space in the Lower East Side has always been born from uncertain terms and played a critical role in forms of protest and community building. I wanted to explore the myriad nature of these places through the objects that populate the parks. Structures, artworks, and refuse are everpresent in these spaces as the seasons change in New York and they reflect the endurance and multifaceted nature of parks and gardens. To this end I conducted a series of photogrammetry experiemtents, digitally capturing the objects through hundreds of images taken during January of 2022.
Outcome
After conducting around ten tests with Agisoft Metashape, I reconstituted my individual objects into an imagined public space using objects and ground planes from each of my various experiments. The imprecise nature of these early tests with metashape along with the contrast between each object draws attention to the unique character held by public spaces in the Lower East Side.
