Notes in
Hand

Process

Notes in Hand is a booklet series born out of phone conversations between visual artist Jason McLean and writer Ann Helga Denny. Inspired by the utilitarian design of “Field Notes” notebooks, each booklet features a single conversation between two artists alongside an original artwork.Pocketable and personal, Notes in Hand is an intimate view into Ann Denny’s relationship with fellow Canadian artists Jason Mclean and Susan Day.

Outcome

Notes in Hand issue #1 was printed in a limited run of sixty-five booklets. The initial release of forty was printed the black ink shown below and an additional twenty-five booklets were printed using white ink as a limited restock. Recurring characters, places, and objects are bolded alluding to the sense familiarity that the speakers’ feel towards their home in Canada and their immediate communities. By riffing on the format of an organizer or journal, Notes in Hand attempts to situate the reader within an interaction that might otherwise be passed over. Parrallel to the artist’s use of found objects in his painting and sculptural practice, Notes in Hand takes hold of a moment easily discarded rendering it for you to hold and hopefully collect.
